We mustn't forget our students' first teachers!

As a teacher, it is absolutely imperative that you work to create positive interactions with parents. Many parents lead extremely busy lives but still want to play a large part in the education of their children. When parents have a positive role in the education process behind their child's academic career, it has been found that children perform better overall. Students have a higher level of productivity and more motivation to excel in various types of academics when they know their parents are involved in their educational development.

As a teacher, it is your goal to ensure that children are actively participating and highly motivated when it comes to their studies. One of the main ways that you can accomplish this goal is to ensure that you create positive relationships with the parents of your students. Here, I will provide you with some suggestions on how you can successfully accomplish this task!

1. One of the first methods you can use in order to foster relationships with the parents of your students is to encourage parents to take part in the many activities that you have in your class. You may request their assistance in arts and crafts activities, cooking foods and treats for the children, or just simply volunteering their time in the classroom. This will allow families to interact in the educational environment of their children and also interact with you. Solid relationships can be built using this model.

2. Communication is a very important element when it comes to building relationships with parents. You will want to communicate consistently with the parents in many different ways. You can send home letters through your students, send emails, make telephone calls, and even set up live teacher conferences. You can even use a combination of communication efforts. Parents will remain in the know when it comes to issues that your students are facing, ways that they are achieving excellence in the classroom, and more!

3. There is one thing that you should know and understand when it comes to parents. They appreciate their input being valued. If a parent consults with you on an issue, you should remain open to their suggestions. Whenever possible, it is important to put their suggestions into action. This will show parents that you care about their stand on certain issues and will make their contributions feel valued in the education of their children.

4. As a teacher, you should encourage the parents of your students to engage in activities from the classroom. Ask your parents to create and join school committees, contribute their skills and talents to the class, and even go along on field trips as a chaperone. All of these activities will allow the parent a special place when it comes to the life of the classroom.

5. Be certain to send out regular progress reports and communications with the parents of your students. You may want to send copies of special assignments home when necessary or provide a review of their child's overall progress and lack of progress in certain areas.

It is very important to create positive relationships with the parents of your students. Not only will this allow you to keep parents in the loop about what is going on when it comes to the academics of their child, you will be encouraging them to motivate their child to actively participate in their academics. And it is this involvement that will make a profound impact on the success of our students.
